Far and away: Designers taking their work abroad

From Hong Kong to New York, the Maldives to Sri Lanka, our three speakers have each made their mark working in far off places. In this session of Artichoke Night School, we ask two designers and a photographer how they gained a foothold in a foreign place, how they oversaw the process from their Australian studio, and the challenges and opportunities involved in such work.

SPEAKERS

Felicity Beck
Felicity is the business director of BAR Studio – steering business development through relationships and negotiations with owners, operators and design collaborators. She creates the foundation for projects in the studio by delaminating their scale and complexity in order to map out deliverables and project staffing. She isalso responsible for managing the internal studio finances.

Kelvin Ho
Kelvin is the founding director of Akin Atelier, a global spatial communications practice operating out of Sydney. Founded in 2005, Akin Atelier is a multidisciplinary practice whose clients and collaborators are truly global. Akin Atelier’s body of over 200 works greatly varies in typology, spanning retail, hospitality, hotels, resorts, public space, set design, and private residential projects. Creatively driven by skate, art, film, and fashion, Kelvin’s style is characterized by a deep knowledge of client/brand, a dedicated focus on concept, and meticulous planning.

Sean Fennessy
Melbourne-based photographer Sean Fennessy shoots both locally and internationally for a variety of editorial and commercial clients in the areas of interiors, architecture and travel. With a degree in journalism and a background as a newspaper photographer, Sean combines his fresh, minimalist style with a strong sense of narrative to tell stories through series rather than one-off hero images.
